Volkan Konak

Volkan Konak (born 27 November 1968) is a Turkish folk-rock musician and singer from Trabzon, one of the most beloved and recognizable voices of the Black Sea region. His music draws deeply from Laz and Pontic Greek musical traditions, and he has played a major role in popularizing eastern Black Sea culture across Turkey.
Musical Style
Volkan Konak’s music is characterized by the fusion of traditional Black Sea instruments — particularly the kemençe (three-stringed fiddle) and tulum (bagpipe) — with modern rock and pop arrangements. His energetic stage performances, often featuring the horon dance, have become legendary in Turkish music culture.
Some of his most iconic songs include:
- “Cerrahpaşa” — One of the most recognizable Turkish songs of the 2000s
- “Aleni Aleni” — A national favorite that transcended regional boundaries
- “Dido” — A tribute to Black Sea culture
Cultural Impact
Volkan Konak has been instrumental in bringing Black Sea and Laz musical traditions to a mainstream Turkish audience. His concerts regularly fill the largest venues in Istanbul and Ankara, and his albums have sold millions of copies. More than any other artist, he has made the sounds of the kemençe and tulum familiar to all of Turkey.
His contribution to cultural preservation cannot be overstated — by making Black Sea music commercially successful and culturally prestigious, he has encouraged younger generations to take pride in their regional heritage.
