Wolfgang Feurstein
Wolfgang Feurstein (1938–2020) was a German linguist, researcher, and cultural activist who dedicated his life to the study and preservation of the Laz language (Lazuri). Though not Laz by birth, he is regarded as an honorary member of the Laz community and one of the most important figures in the modern history of the Laz language.
The Laz Alphabet
Feurstein’s most significant contribution was his role in developing the modern Latin-based Laz alphabet in 1984, working closely with Laz intellectuals in Turkey and Germany. This alphabet — with modifications over the years — has become the standard writing system for Lazuri and the foundation of all subsequent Laz literacy work.
Language Documentation
Over decades of fieldwork, Feurstein compiled extensive linguistic data on the Laz language, including:
- Grammar descriptions of all major Laz dialects
- Vocabulary collections and word lists
- Recordings of native speakers
- Transcriptions of traditional songs, stories, and oral histories
His work provided the scholarly foundation upon which later Laz language education materials, dictionaries, and textbooks were built.
Legacy
Wolfgang Feurstein’s dedication to a language and people not his own is a remarkable story of cross-cultural solidarity. His passing in 2020 was mourned by the Laz community as the loss of a true friend and champion. The alphabet he helped create continues to be used by every Laz person who writes in their mother tongue — a living monument to his life’s work.
