The Laz people have produced remarkable musicians, scholars, rulers and activists whose work has shaped Laz identity and carried the culture of the eastern Black Sea to the wider world. This page brings together the most notable figures of Laz origin, organised by the field in which they left their mark.

Laz Musicians

Music is one of the most powerful expressions of Laz identity, and these artists have brought the sound of the Black Sea to national and international audiences.

  • Kazım Koyuncu (1971–2005). Often called the Che Guevara of the Black Sea, he is the most iconic cultural figure of the modern Laz identity, blending Lazuri lyrics with rock to give the language a contemporary voice.
  • Volkan Konak (b. 1968). A beloved folk-rock singer from Trabzon who fused Laz and Pontic musical traditions with modern arrangements, popularising eastern Black Sea culture across Türkiye.
  • Birol Topaloğlu (b. 1959). A musician and researcher from Çamlıhemşin and a master of the tulum, dedicated to recording and preserving traditional Laz songs before they are lost.

Historical Figures

  • King Gubazes II of Lazica (d. 555 AD). Ruler of the Kingdom of Lazica during the Lazic War between the Byzantine and Sassanid empires, a pivotal figure in the ancient history of the Laz homeland.
  • John the Laz (5th century). A Laz monk and theologian, born in Lazica, who became a founder of Christian monasticism in Jerusalem and the lifelong companion of Peter the Iberian.

Writers & Academics

  • İskender Tzitashi. A Laz intellectual who created the first Laz alphabet in 1929 in the Soviet Union, pioneering written Laz literature.
  • Wolfgang Feurstein (1938–2020). A German linguist who, though not Laz by birth, devoted his life to the Laz language and helped develop the modern Latin-based Laz alphabet in 1984.
